SF0207 The Bicentenary Poll Ep7 #10-1

At last! The Top Ten Songs of All-Time, as voted by you, the podcast listener.

n the end, after all the discussion in pubs and clubs, numbers 1-7 of the Bicentenary Poll were reasonably predictable. Not that that’s a bad thing, the tracks are of course among the best ever recorded. However, I was familiar with 6 of the 7 bands before I went to university in 1981 and had heard 4 of the songs by then as well.

But numbers 8 to 11 were from the last few years and I was delighted that MJ Lenderman, Horsegirl and Dry Cleaning all broke the Top 10. So along with The Strokes’ ‘Ode to the Mets’ and Richard Dawson’s ‘Jogging’, the recent past was quite well represented.

It’s worth reflecting on some of the bands that didn’t make the Top 100.

Some artists you might have expected to see: Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, The Associates, The Au Pairs, Augustus Pablo, The Auteurs, Automatic, Black Country New Road, Boards of Canada, Broadcast, Broken Social Scene, Burial, Burning Spear, Cabaret Voltaire, Cocteau Twins, Codeine, Cola, Cusp, The Damned, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Deerhunter, The Delgados, Dinosaur Jr, The Durutti Column, Echo and the Bunnymen, Elastica, Elliott Smith, Fountains of Wayne, Fugazi, Galaxie 500, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Grandaddy, Hefner, Husker Du, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jockstrap, John Cale, Josef K, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Modest Mouse, The Mountain Goats, my bloody valentine, The National, Orange Juice, Parquet Courts, PJ Harvey, Protomartyr, PIL, REM, Red House Painters, Sebadoh, The Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Slits, Sparklehorse, The Specials, Sufjan Stevens, The Stooges, The Sundays, The Teardrop Explodes, This Mortal Coil, Wednesday, The White Stripes, Wombo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yo La Tengo.

Who knows what the poll will look like at the end of the 400th episode when we next repeat this exercise, God Willing. If there is music then. Probably there will be music then.
