Nouns are an experimental punk band from Little Rock, Arkansas, led by guitarist and vocalist Hunter Clifton Mann. They took their name from the 2010 album by Los Angeles noise-punk duo No Age, which tells you something about where their hearts lie: in the overlap between scrappy DIY punk, emo and noise.
Their debut, still bummed, was released in March 2013 and is home to ‘dogs’. Most of it was written and recorded when the members were just 17, and it has the urgency and rawness that implies. It was followed the next February by still, released on Funeral Sounds Records, which drew praise for its intensely personal lyrics and the breadth of styles it covered.
Mann has cited a striking mix of influences, from Japanese alternative rock band Number Girl to Latterman, Math the Band, Modest Mouse and Joy Division. After an extended hiatus the band returned with Lonely Place of Dyin in 2021 and WHILE OF UNSOUND MIND in 2022, proving that the adolescent energy of their early records had matured rather than dissipated.
