Serious Drinking

Serious Drinking is a punk band hailing from Bath, England, known for their sharp wit and humorous take on working-class life. Emerging in the early 1980s, they carved out a niche with their clever lyrics and energetic performances, blending punk’s raw edge with a distinctly British sense of humour. Their music often tackled themes of everyday struggles, drinking culture, and social commentary, making them stand out in the punk scene of the time.

The band drew inspiration from punk pioneers like The Clash and The Damned, but also infused their sound with a playful, almost satirical tone reminiscent of bands like the Buzzcocks. This mix of influences helped Serious Drinking create a unique voice that was both rebellious and approachable. Their style resonated with fans who appreciated punk’s attitude but also craved a bit of levity and clever wordplay.

Serious Drinking’s influence can be traced in the work of later bands such as The Levellers and The Men They Couldn’t Hang, who have cited them as a formative inspiration for blending political messaging with folk-punk energy. Despite never achieving massive commercial success, Serious Drinking’s impact on the UK punk and folk-punk scenes is recognised by musicians and fans alike, marking them as a cult favourite with a lasting legacy.

One famous anecdote about the band involves their notorious live shows, where they would often incorporate humorous banter and audience interaction, creating a party atmosphere that was both chaotic and inclusive. Their song “Love On The Terraces” became an anthem for football fans, capturing the passion and camaraderie of match days, which helped cement their reputation as a band that truly understood and celebrated working-class culture.

Though Serious Drinking may not be a household name globally, their blend of punk energy, lyrical wit, and cultural commentary has earned them a dedicated following. Their ability to mix humour with serious themes, combined with their roots in Bath, makes them a fascinating and enduring part of the British punk landscape.
