Caamp began as a project between childhood friends Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall, who met at a summer camp in middle school and graduated together from Upper Arlington High School, in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, in 2012. Meier started playing coffee shops in Athens while studying at Ohio University, and the duo’s ramshackle banjo-and-guitar folk soon grew into a full band with Matt Vinson, Joseph Kavalec and Nick Falk.
Their self-titled debut, released in 2016, included ‘Vagabond’, which slowly spread by word of mouth and streaming until it was certified gold in the US. By & By (2019) debuted at number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, and ‘Peach Fuzz’ became the first of a string of number ones on the US adult alternative radio chart.
Lavender Days (2022) broadened their sound, and the band earned a 2023 Americana Music Association nomination for Duo/Group of the Year. Along the way, Barack Obama put ‘Apple Tree Blues’ on one of his summer playlists, and the band have sold out venues from Red Rocks Amphitheatre to Radio City Music Hall.
Copper Changes Color, released in 2025 and home to ‘Mistakes’, continued their run of radio success, with ‘Mistakes’ becoming their fifth adult alternative number one. That year their song ‘And It’s Gone’ was also chosen as the theme for the Apple TV+ series Stick. For all the success, Caamp have kept the scrappy, communal feel of a band that started out playing songs to friends.
