SF0177 The End of the Affair

Valentine’s Day is upon us once more. But the flowers of romance can fade and die – as these tracks tell us, all too sadly.

By the laws of statistics, most romantic relationships will end. It’s sad but inevitable. So here are some anti-Valentine’s-Day songs, if you like. (We are, after all, an alternative music podcast.) A couple of years ago we did a pro-romance Valentine’s Day episode, though – check it out in the episodes list – which was a celebration of this Hallmark occasion.

And this is the second in our sequence of episodes with a Graham Greene novel as its title. I’ve been perusing his bibliography and debating whether there should be a third in the trilogy. Some candidates:

  • England made me
  • The heart of the matter
  • Travels with my aunt
  • Our man in Havana
  • The quiet American
  • The Ministry of Fear

I rather think either of the last two has their nose in front.

Despite all of the above I do wish everybody a very happy Valentine’s Day. I know for some people it’s an important day in the year. Personally, we’ve never celebrated it and somehow stayed together for 35 years. (And yet oddly, I do regard myself as quite romantic. Maybe I’m self-deluded.) Less forgivably, we both also forget our wedding anniversary each year. Thank goodness both of us do.
