It’s always nice to say you were the first..

So it is with no small degree of pride that I can say I was the first interviewee on Steve Pringle’s new podcast venture, Steve’s Mix Tapes. Steve, as you may know, is the author of the definitive book on The Fall’s oeuvre, ‘You Must Get Them All’. And it was an intriguing experience to be on the other side of the microphone. Well, the same side, really, but you know what I mean

The basic concept behind the podcast is to interview someone who has an interest in music. Out of the conversation emerges a mixtape subscribing to the following formula:–

• Track 1 Hit the ground running
Something to set the pulse racing
• Track 2 Something old
A song from 50+ years ago
• Track 3 Something new
Released in the last 12 months
• Track 4 Something borrowed
A cover, or something based around a familiar sample
• Track 5 Something blue
Blues, ‘blue(s)’ in the title, or just a sad song
• Track 6 Take it down
  A quiet, contemplative moment
• Track 7 Around the world
Beyond the UK / North America
• Track 8 Left of centre
  Something obscure, experimental or avant-garde
• Track 9 Wild card
  Free choice
• Track 10 Finale
  A stirring conclusion

The tracks which emerged from my chat with Steve were these. Note, I think all of them have been played before on SF – except for Track 8.
