Oh God, back to work after Christmas and New Year.
Actually the first week isn’t usually too bad, as people are still straggling back from their holiday breaks, especially in Australia, where some people take the first two weeks off.
But then the credit card reckoning.
Anyway, this list of tracks takes a generally cynical view of the workplace. I was lucky in that I generally enjoyed my work. The only times I really didn’t was at the start when I started doing a job and working for a company that was a terrible fit for both of us. And right at the end when I was being squeezed out – a familiar story to office workers in their 50s, of course.
But let’s not get ensnarled with bitter recriminations and fully justified finger pointing!
Instead here are some humorous observations about work:-
“Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their work done.” — Peter Drucker
“Hard work never killed anybody, but why take a chance?” — Edgar Bergen
“Sometimes I spend the whole meeting wondering how they got the big meeting table through the door.” — Anonymous
“The reward for good work is more work.” – Francesca Elisia
“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure.” — Mark Twain
“If you had to identify in one word the reason why the human race has not achieved and never will achieve its full potential, that word would be ‘meetings.” – Dave Barry
“If a man smiles all the time, he’s probably selling something that doesn’t work.” — Woody Allen
